All I know is back in the day it was the “Rock’n'Roll” hotel in Chicago, equivalent to the Hyatt on Sunset in L.A,., or the Gramercy Park in NYC.

Just to piggyback on the information that was given before, the Ambassador East is an incredible hotel. It has been around forever. It is located on State St. which is about one block from Michigan Ave. You will be close to great shopping and very good food.
The area is really busy all the time. There is little risk of crime as long as you don’t do something silly. If you are siteseeing make sure that you take in the Sears Tower and the CBOT. There are several theaters in the area where you can take in a play and both baseball teams are in first place. You can take the L (subway) just about anywhere you need to go, it is close to your location.
Are you going to Taste of Chicago? You will be very close. If you are I am so jealous.

It is a great location! I go down State St. and Michigan Ave. a lot and you are right in the middle! And I have never been in the hotel itself, but from what I have heard, it is great! There are a few sports stores right on Michigan Ave. that probably have some Yanks gear.
By the way, if you are going to Chicago, eat at a deep dish pizza place! I like the four-cheese pizza at Gino’s East. And go see a WHite Sox game!

The Ambassador East, with it’s restaurant The Pump Room, is one of the most famous hotels in Chicago. It is in an very safe area;however, I would rather stay in a location that’s a mile or two south of there on Michigan Ave.(Closer to Art Institute, Buckingham Fountain, Aquarium, Taste, Ontario Street nightlife, Navy Pier) The Ambassador East is not walking distance to the Taste of Chicago. But, the Ambassador East is known for it’s elegance. But, no matter where you stay you can catch the Red Line on State Street and take it to U.S. Cellular Field………Go White Sox.
